Mythbuster: I have a high gpa and test score so I’m definitely getting into USC

The Myth: the remainder application doesn’t matter if I have a high gpa and test score.

The Verdict: Nope.

‘It’s all about the numbers’ generally seems to be something I unfortunately hear a significant bit when folks mention college admission. It generates me sad because that is completely false when speaing frankly about the admission process at USC. Students, counselors and parents have a tendency to get really anxious about GPAs and test scores.

GPAs and test scores are essential, but they aren’t the just deciding factor in a student’s admission choice. Students signing up to USC will be automatically admitted never nor denied based entirely on GPA and test scores.

Our company is to know a learning student the most effective we perhaps can through the admission process. GPAs and test ratings help us determine how well you do academically, but we would also like to access know you beyond that. We should learn about the manner in which you invest your time outside for the class. We are interested in getting to know your character and the life experiences you could have had up to this point. We want to learn why you are interested in going to university at USC. We want to study from your teachers or counselors their perspective on who you really are as student and human being. We can not get all that information from just a GPA and a test score.

This is the reason we don’t have a cutoff for GPAs and test scores. We wish to ensure you have the preparation that is academic achieve success at USC, but that can be determined in lots of ways. We evaluate your transcript although we calculate your GPA. What type of classes is the learning student taking? Is the student challenging herself in the context of what can be obtained at her school? How exactly does this relate genuinely to her standard testing? There isn’t A gpa that is magic and rating combination to determine all this.

Admission to USC is competitive. They are many, many qualified students who are applying to USC. We don’t have spots for them all in our incoming class. We utilize qualitative components such as task summaries, essays, and letters of guidelines to make distinctions among our numerous exemplary candidates.

Whenever we wanted, we could simply take the highest GPAs and test ratings and admit those students. We would admit a very different class than the one we just enrolled if we did that. I also would n’t have job must be computer could do that. Our admission procedure is an individual one, and we are looking to bring a well-rounded course to USC. We aim to achieve this by using your application that is entire to up to we can about you.

A high GPA and test score isn’t ticket that is golden admission at USC. We get beyond the numbers, and we wish you do too in your application.

Hello from the other side….

Interviews…another part regarding the university application process. We’re currently completing our on-campus interviews through the end of November (Thanksgiving excluded.) You might also see us performing interviews in metropolitan areas towards you throughout the United States. At this point in the process, it’s possible you’ve already been through a college that is few, and I’m yes at the end you left with either feelings of success, frustration, excitement or a number of other adjectives which could describe the uncertainty that is an interview. Hopefully I can offer you a insight that is little that which we are thinking during those 30 minutes.

Our interviews generally last around 25 minutes and we as admission counselors, invest afternoons, from 1:30 pm until 4:30 pm, interviewing around five students. So, what’s actually going through our minds once we take a seat over the table from you? Well, that largely depends on you…

Are you visibly nervous? Perspiring? About to digest in tears? In the event that response is yes, then I am most likely hoping that I’m able to help you to calm down. I shall generally get started with questions that have clear cut answers: Tell me exactly what classes you might be taking this semester…What book are you reading in English appropriate now? Students don’t have to think about these relevant concerns, they have the answers. Ideally, this can help the person settle down, and we could have a relaxed conversation. If this been there as well, don’t worry, you are not the only person. Most of times students feel at ease pretty quickly when they realize the true nature with this interview. The ideas that are main attempt to draw out from students are the following: 1) performs this person know why they have been applying to USC? Will there be something certain they’ve seen here that is of interest to them? 2) Can this learning student think critically? Can they respond to a concern that needs though or may possibly not have an answer that is obvious? 3) Are they confident in their abilities and so are they sure they could succeed at USC? College is hard and we want people who wish to be right here.

The vast majority of my interviews go smoothly with really few bumps into the road. There are of course moments when I repeat myself because I can not remember if I’ve asked question with this interview, or the one right before it. Therefore in advance, please forgive me you the same question twice if I ask. My goal during an interview is to get a solid conversation going so it feel less like an interview, and much more like one person looking to get to learn another. So just come with a mind that is open greet us with excitement (hopefully genuine), and everything will get smoothly.
